Statement of CAPT. Douglas L. Mayers, MC USN
) STATK ENT OF CAPT Douglas L. Mayers, MC USN 0930-1035 24 November 1992 COL Dangerfield initiated the meeting with an explanation of the informal investigation process and a review of the charges for which he was responsible to determine the facts and the allegations that pertained to scientific misconduct. He asked for any information that I may have that would bear on the investigation. I stated that I was in a unique position by virtue of having rsorked in both Departments of the Division of Retroviroloqy. When I joined the program, I informed COL Burke that I wanted to work with antiretroviral drugs and did not believe that vaccine therapy would work. Nevertheless, since the majority of the research and clinical trials were performed by the Department of Retroviral Research, I was assigned to LTC Redfield in September 1989. Within two months, COL Burke created the HIV Mission Area Protocols to coordinate the military HIV research program and I was made responsible for coordinating HIV Chemotherapy studies. This required me to report simultaneously to LTC Redfield for supervision of my research project and to COL Burke for coordination of HIV chemotherapy studies, evaluation of BAA proposals and development of support contracts. In March or April of 1990, I wa transferred to the Department of Diagnostic Retrovirology 557111111111111111111111111111195.0452.29 5571095.0452.029 A",
