[1991 Annual Report, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research]
Additionally, we served as a resource for media personnel, often providing background data and appearing on national programs or in significant publications. This proved invaluable when we helped coordinate Kimberly Bergalis' efforts to testify before Congress. We also had one-on-one meetings with numerous leaders in AIDS/HIV research, policy development, education, and service delivery-both sharing our perspective and being briefed on current developments. We also were appointed to serve on a U.S. Centers for Disease Control committee looking at STDs and HIV, broadening our own information base while affecting policy development. But our greatest and most satisfying reward came in being able to help families struggling with HIV disease, offering assistance in some form to more than 1,200 children and families. All this was accomplished by a small but dedicated staff, bolstered by many donors and volunteers, and the expert advice of a highly qualified advisory board. 1991 was a banner year which on top of past efforts laid a strong foundation for 1992 and the years ahead. We welcome your input and help as you get to know us better through this annual report. Thank you for your interest. W. Shepherd Smith, Jr. President 8
