The publication's intent was to make information available to those outside the
Washington, D.C. political arena, showing how they could access dollars allocated for
grant and contract programs conducted by community-based organizations. Many local
AIDS/HIV organizations struggle valiantly to serve their communities without federal or
state support, without the knowledge of available tools to tap existing resources. The
result: some of the organizations and programs receiving ongoing funding may not address the underserved and minority populations so devastated by this disease.
The Office of Minority Health in the Department of Health and Human Services
made the guide available to all registrants at its eight regional conferences in 1991. Virtually the entire inventory of the first edition was distributed. An update of the guide is
slated for the summer of 1992.
Other publications in 1991 included four issues of AIDS/HIV News (formerly ASAP
News), a reprint of the book by Shepherd and Anita Smith Christians in the Age of
AIDS, and a reprint of the education and policy guide for churches The Church's
Response to the Challenge of AIDS/HIV.
CDC Cooperative
Agreement
In 1991 ASAP completed most of its second year of the five-year cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control to educate and involve the religious community in the AIDS/HIV issue. During the first year, focus was educating denominational leaders and national-level executives. While some of that activity also occurred in
1991, additional attention was placed on educating local pastors, state-level leaders,
church school teachers, college campus workers, and other responsible for educating the
youth attending churches across the nation.
