CLARIFICATION
It has been brought to jgt p' s attention that, on October 6, Lisa Krieger of The
San Francisco Examiner reported on the unusual $20 million Congressional appropriation
to one company, MicroGeneSys, to test its AIDS vaccine in people. This information
compels us to correct a sentence in our October 22nd media release.
That release highlighted an investigative report by journalist Jon Cohen in the
October 23rd issue, which provided an in-depth look at MicroGeneSys's successful lobbying
blitz of Senators Daniel Inouye and Sam Nunn. Cohen's October 23rd article follows on
an earlier article, published in the October 9th issue of $Scienc, in which he provided early
details of the high-powered lobbying effort conducted by the company through former
Senator Russell Long of Louisiana. By way of background. the release mentioned the
earlier piece, stating that Cohen "broke the story of the unusual appropriation in the
October 9th Science." Unbeknownst to Cohen and Science' s editors, Krieger' s story was
published three days earlier. For the record, Cohen' s first story nevertheless broke new
ground with its early characterization of the successful lobbying effort.
