Searchlight Vol. 3, no. 1

Research Fund Established to Honor PaulJabara by Susan Black, Assistant Editor Paul Jabara, the versatile singer, songwriter and performer, died last summer after a long and courageous battle with AIDS. Jabara gained national prominence in the late '70s when "Last Dance," a song he wrote for Donna Summer, became a multi-award-winning hit. During his lifetime he enjoyed a great deal of success in the recording industry and, in recent years, on Broadway...... vNow Jabara's family has established a research fund in his name, and proceeds are being... donated to SEARCH Alliance for clinical trials of new drugs to fight AIDS. "Paul was certainly a strong fighter from the start of his illness," said Dr. GaryJacobs, one of Jabara's personal physicians who is also a member of the SEARCH Alliance Scientific Advisory Board. "Paul's family and his friends in the community feel it is vital that we come together to help SEARCH Alliance in seeking a cure," Jacobs said. "Paul's last song, 'We're Gonna Win,' is a very positive statement for fighting this terrible disease," Jacobs added. In it, Jabara calls for unity in the AIDS cause: "We'll make a chain too strong to break/We won't give up, we won't give in/We're gonna fight, we're gonna win/Don't give up on the dream we've shared for a lifetime." S Some years ago, in an interview with Jabara right after he won a Grammy for "Last Dance," he was asked how he would like to be remembered. "Adventurous... willing to try anything, +...to just taste life completely," he grinned, with characteristic good humor. As the interview Scame to an end, he was asked if he had anything special he wanted to say. In light of the cur rent fight against AIDS, his words now take on a special meaning: "There are a lot of people who are very talented but don't have the strength to constantly fight. And sometimes they give up, which is very disappointing, because it's a tough business. But I have to believe that faith is going to make you come through." Co-chairs Stockton Briggle and Linda Berman congratulated the group on its encouraging show of support-many new faces were seen at this gathering, indicating that the call to "bring a friend" to meetings is drawing strong response. SEARCH Alliance Executive Director Marcia Smith spoke to the group about the politics and economics surrounding the AIDS epidemic, while Drs. Gary Cohan, Robert Jenkins and Anthony Scarsella illuminated issues particular to women with HIV. This focus has been quickly adopted as the first order of business on the WomenSEARCH agenda, and a number of committees were organized in order to launch various projects targeting public awareness of women's health care. These areas include public relations, corporate sponsorship, doctors' awareness, education, and special events. Subsequent meetings will further define projects and members' roles. Those interested in committing time, energy and expertise to the goals of WomenSEARCH are welcomed and encouraged to attend. If you are interested in participating in WomenSEARCH, please call the SEARCH Alliance office.
