Summary Statement: ADARC Program Project on HIV/SIV Vaccine Development
PAGE 49 1 P01 AI43042-01 24 SEP Ho, David D. three individual research projects will utilize the Primate Core's essential services and facilities, so that the existence of the core is well justified. The available resources are more than adequate to conduct the proposed research, and the investigators and key personnel are well qualified and experienced in primate SIV and SHIV work. The currently ongoing transfer of ownership of the LEMSIP facilities should have no appreciable effect on the successful completion of these projects, so that funding of this core is entirely appropriate. The core leader have a lengthy history of utilizing this core as part of ongoing.primate projects, and possess the expertise, experience and qualifications to successfully complete this work. The key staff members at LEMSIP are equally well -experienced and skilled and are fully equipped to carry out the proposed research. The ADARC has had an active Primate Laboratory at LEMSIP for a number of years. The facilities are more than adequate to perform the services required by these projects. The recommendation for this core is appropriate. REVIENER B: The Primate Core is the largest facility among three central cores in this application. The Primate Core is designed to both carry out independent research and provide support and resources for the investigators of this Program Project to study HIV/SIV vaccine development. The Primate Core facility is located at the Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates (LEMSIP) in Tuxedo, NY. LEMSIP is a USDA-inspected and approved primate research facility. It is in compliance with federal guidelines for animal care. The research protocol for the use of animals is reviewed and approved by the IACUC of LEMSIP. The Primate Core will provide the resources and facility to investigators of this application for their SIV/SHIV studies in macaques. Approximately 1533 sq. ft. of the Infectious Wing is used for housing of singly-caged macaques under biosafety level "2+" conditions. Animal care and veterinary services are provided by the full-time staff consisting of 15 animal technicians and two veterinarians. The administrative staff of the Primate Core consists of the Principal Investigator, Dr. Marx (15 percent effort) for coordination and oversight of research and core services, an experienced Senior Primate Technician (40 percent effort) for support of animal studies, and a "To-be-Named" Research Technician (100 percent) for research support. The Principal Investigator of this core, Dr. P. Marx is an exceptionally well qualified simian retrovirologist, scientist, and administrator. The Primate Core ac~itty at LEISTIF (M wel established research environment) is rated as excellent. The Primate Core has established macaque models with SIV and SHIV infections, and virus stocks of SIVac, SHIV, and heterologous primary SIVs for challenge studies proposed by the investigators.
