PAGE 37 1 P01 AI43042-01 12 SEP Ho, David D. tightly focused but broadly based analytical experiments. Together, these studies will help to define a number of important parameters associated with protective immunity in live-attenuated SIV vaccines, and contribute to this poorly understood but critical field. The scientific importance of these goals, the high quality of the proposed research and the expertise of the key personnel are all strengths of this project. SUMMARY OF OTHER REVIEWERS COMMENTS: During the discussion led by the assigned reviewers, additional committee members expressed opinions about various aspects of the application. The essentially unedited written comments of these committee members are presented below. The majority of the reviewers agreed that the proposed studies are, in general, not novel and some of them had already been carriedout, or currently are being investigated in other research laboratories. Specifically, in Project 1 they believed that much of the proposed work is being already done, or has been done both in the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and many other laboratories. SThe members of the study section were unable to review the budget of this proposal since the Principal Investigator did not assign specific budgets to each of the application's individual projects. Human Subjects: code 10 Gender and Minority Representation: not applicable Animal Helfare: code 30 Budget: There is no breakthrough budget for this core, and therefore, it is not possible to assess. IRG Action: This jec received a priority score in the good range with a numerical valueo 292. Administrative Note: As presented, this project does not contain a breakthrough budget with detailed description of expenses. In order for the budget to be evaluated, the committee recommended that the applicants must submit a complete and detailed description of the budget for Project 1. PROJECT 2: Vaccine Strain Selection Envelope Modifi cation, and SHIV/Macaque Model Development Critique. The comments below represent essentially unedited comments from the reviewers of this application. They are included to indicate the range of comments made during the discussion, and may not reflect the final thinking of the committee. The RESUME and OVERALL CRITIQUE sections above summarize the final opinion of the committee after the discussion. Continued
