(Photo by-Kdren Farber) rom March 20 to 22, 1998, the Center for Bio-Medical Communication, Inc. (CBC) will present, in collabora tion with AmFAR, Management of the HIV-infected Patient: A Practical Approach for the Primary Care Practitioner. The goal of the course is to provide the practitionerincluding internists, infectious disease specialists, generalists and allied health professionals-with the most current, clinically applicable information for treating HIV at all stages of infection. Health professionals who provide services to the HIV-infected patient will benefit from this course, which will include clinical guidelines for proper initial assessment of the HIV-infected patient, creating an awareness and understanding of the expanding armamentarium of antiretroviral therapies, and discussing the status of new investigations in prevention and treatment. The program is co-chaired by Dr. Arthur J. Ammann, President of AmFAR, Dr. Henry Masur, Chief of Critical Care Medicine at the Clinical Center/NIH, and Dr. H. Clifford Lane, Clinical Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at NIH. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is unique in its complexity and virulence. Despite all the efforts of science, morbidity and mortality continue to be devastating. The World Health Organization estimates that the number of people infected with HIV may go as high as 40 million by the year 2000. Of these, 60% will be women. In the United States alone, more than one million people have already died of AIDS or are currently living with HIN While there still is no known cure, many recent advances in the management of the disease, including triple antiretroviral therapy, prophylaxis for opportunistic infections, and immunotherapy, have resulted in longer survival and improved quality of life for HIV-infected patients. It is vitally important that practicing physicians be kept aware of these developments and techniques to optimize the care of their HIV-infected patients. As we have moved from an era when no treatment to control HIV infection was available, into one in which there are eleven drugs for the treatment of HIV infection alone, health care providers must be fully informed about when to start treatment, what treatment to use, and when drugs should be changed. The Continuing Medical Education course will enable health care workers to provide the optimum standard of care and to have an impact on the health and survival of their patients. For more information and to register for the course, please contact the Center for Bio-Medical Communication, Inc., 80 West Madison Avenue, Dumont, NJ 07628, telephone 201-385-8080, ext. 126.
