Robert Schooley, M.D., Joins Vertex Scientific Advisory Board
Cambridge, MA, July 8, 1993. Robert Turner Schooley, M.D., has joined the Scientific
Advisory Board of Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ:VRTX). Dr.
Schooley is a leading clinician and researcher in the field of virology with particular
expertise with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and AIDS. He is presently
Director of the Infectious Disease Division of the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center, where his laboratory is investigating pathogenesis of HIV and herpes group
viruses. Dr. Schooley is also Professor of Medicine at the University and Staff Physician
for the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Dr. Vicki Sato, Vertex's Vice President of Research, Chief Scientific Officer and Chair of
the Scientific Advisory Board, remarked, "Dr. Schooley brings to Vertex a wealth of
clinical and research expertise in the development of new drugs to treat significant viral
diseases. We expect that Dr. Schooley, as a leading authority on AIDS and retroviral
infection, will make important contributions to our antiviral programs, particularly as our
compounds move towards clinical trials."
Dr. Schooley chairs the Immunology Committee of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) AIDS Clinical Trials Group, which oversees immune therapeutic efforts in AIDS,
and is a member of the AIDS and Related Retroviruses I Study Section of the NIH, which
reviews grants for investigators working in the HIV area. Prior to his appointments in
Colorado, Dr. Schooley was Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical
School and practiced at the Massachusetts General Hospital, where he directed the
Fellowship Program for the Infectious Disease Unit and served as Acting Director of the
AIDS Clinical Trials Group.
