Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions 600 North Wolfe Street/Baltimore, MD 21205 MEMORANDUM TO: Editors, producers and reporters FROM: Marion E. Glick DATE: July 30, 1991 SUBJECT: New Anti-HIV-1 Trial -- tat Inhibitor The Johns Hopkins division of clinical pharmacology is conducting the only U.S. study of an experimental drug called "tat inhibitor" that attacks a process controlling reproduction of the virus that causes AIDS. The compound is the first of its kind to undergo human testing. Hopkins needs 45 volunteers for the study, which will examine how the human body processes the drug and establish safe and potentially effective oral dose levels. Men and women, age 18 or older, who are HIV-1-infected and have mild symptoms are eligible. Subjects must stay at the Hospital for 11 days and will be paid for their participation. Potential subjects who want more information about the tat trial should call Lynda Nerhood at (301) 955-7703 or Paul Lietman, M.D., or Lional Lewis, M.D., at (301) 955-3100. If they want further information on other Hopkins anti-HIV-1 drug trials, they should call the AIDS Hotline of The Johns Hopkins AIDS Service, (301) 955-4345.
