What Every Pregnant Woman Should Know about HIV and AIDS

What kind of treatment is available? Doctors have recently learned that the drug AZT can greatly reduce your chances of giving the AIDS virus to your baby. In one study, AZT was shown to reduce transmission by 67%. You may want to discuss the possibility of this treatment for yourself and your baby with your health care provider. If you want to know more about AZT and pregnancy, you can call the CDC National AIDS Hotline and ask for a free copy of "You, Your Baby, and AZT". It will explain more about how to increase the chances of having a healthy baby. How can I get an HIV test? Ask your health care provider for more information about HIV testing, or you can find HIV testing sites near you by looking in the white pages of your telephone book under County Government Offices, Health & Human Services. You can also call your state Department of Health. The best way to protect your baby from HIV infection is to protect yourself
