12. Every large intervention study should be monitored by an independent Data and Safety Monitoring Board. 13. To ensure that the most relevant scientific questions are addressed, and to a chieve complementarity, there is a need for world wide coordination of research activities. WHO should assume this coordinating role, as it is in a unique position to do so.
