[Letter to Serge Lang from Jon Cohen]

Dear Dr. Lang,
Again, I thank you for sending me the large package of
material. I have a few questions regarding your thinking
about HIV/AIDS and Peter Duesberg.
In the document you sent me titled "HIV and AIDS: Questions
of Scientific and Journalistic Responsibility" that is dated
15 October 1994 you write: "I take no position here on the
relative merits of the AIDS virus hypothesis or the AIDS
drug hypothesis (in whatever form they may be formulated)."
Yet in the same document, you also refer to "HIV is the
cause of AIDS" as "dogma." One of the definitions of dogma
is "a belief." Another, according to my New World
Dictionary, is "a positive, arrogant assertion of opinion."
My questions are:
la. Are you suggesting that the statement "HIV is the cause
of AIDS" is not backed by convincing scientific evidence?
lb. If not, what exactly is your point?
ic. If you are, then isn't that taking a position on the
merits of the HIV/AIDS hypothesis--the position being that
you do not think it has been sufficiently proven?
2. You refer to your concerns about the "classical standards
of science." You spell out your concerns about the way
information is released and the quality of the research. Are
you also concerned that scientists like Peter Duesberg who
question the link between HIV and AIDS have been treated
unfairly by what many refer to as the "AIDS establishment"?
3. You extensively cite Duesberg's writings and references
that he has provided you with, yet I do not see any other
references of AIDS literature. Have you investigated the
AIDS literature to address the question about the link
between HIV and AIDS?
