Dear Dr. Duesberg:
You will find enclosed a response to your letter of August, 1992. This was
prepared in August but was not finished in time to send it to you before I left
early in September. I have just come to your letter of September 4 among the
pieces of correspondence that accumulated during my absence in September.
In regard to your letter of September 4:
(1) Let me remind you again that you are again misquoting me: "Basic and
pervasive problems with the paper" is not the same as "profound and pervasive
differences in opinion."
(2) Let me remind you also that the manuscript about which we have had much
correspondence did not deal simply with the possibility that there could be HIVfree AIDS cases. Your argument -- whic ".cognsultants found wanting -- was
that AIDS is caused by drugs etc. but not by HIV.
(3) I will remind you again, also thatthe PROCEEDINGS considers papers
which are submitted for publication niAiird e and regular maniter.7 e make
o mmtments to publish Communicate or Contributed papers which 'we have not
yet received. Nor, do we decline to consider any paper Communicated or
Contributed to the PROCEEDINGS. Consequently, I cannot respond positively or
negatively to your request that we publish a new (?) manuscript which we have not
yet gotten on the question of the existence of HIV-free AIDS.
Thank you for sending me a copy of a page from NATURE for 2 July 1992. You
are in error in stating in your letter to NATURE that "Membership [in the
National Academy of Sciences] typically includes the privilege of publishing
without editorial review."
