[Letter to Colleagues from Peter Duesberg]

August 14, 1992 Dr. Lawrence Bogorad Department of Cellular and Developmental Biology Harvard University The Biological Laboratories 16 Divinity Avenue Cambridge, MA 02138 Dear Dr. Bogorad, Earlier this year you rejected my paper on "The role of drugs in AIDS" that described HIV-free AIDS cases, contrary to the advice of four reviewers selected by Dr. Rubin and following the advice of six anonymous reviewers selected by you. Although no factual or logical errors in my paper were detected by any of these reviewers, you pointed out to me that you were concerned for "the reputation" of the Proceedings because of "profound and pervasive differences in opinion." Now you have published, and even authorized advance circulation of, a paper by Salahuddin et al. that describes a "new virus" in an HIV-free AIDS case (PNAS, No. 16, Aug. 1992). I wonder whether you are aware that Salahuddin was the first of several collaborators of Dr. Gab who were convicted of a felony? (See enclosed articles from The Washington Post, Baltimore Evening Sun, Associated Press, The New York Native, etc.) Would you now also consider a paper from me on HIV-free AIDS cases? Sincerely, Peter Duesberg PD:bd Encs. cc: Francis Zwanzig, PNAS Frank Press, President of NAS Gunther Stent, UC-Berkeley Jim Watson, Cold Spring Harbor Harry Rubin, UC-Berkeley Walter Gilbert, Harvard
