[Letter to Colleagues from Peter Duesberg]

11 "Moreover...In addition, Furthermore.. etc." I know that the author is attempting to make the narrative flow, but these words confuse the reader into thinking that something of minor interest is following. This reviewer is reminded of the story of a letter sent by a son to his father from summer camp: The food was OK, the fishing fine, his new friends were swell and... "Furthermore, I have broken both legs and have been in a cast for 3 weeks!" What the author should say, if anything, is - "Of special interest is...or " A more convincing study confirms this point.." or often better is just say nothing and go right into the declarative sentence! p15 110 AZT-therapy (122), it seems further unjustified.... From everything that the author has set forth, it does not seem that AZT therapy is justified under any circumstances. At the minimum, this sentence should be terminated at the comma, "AZT-therapy (122)." Or state as a separate sentence that" there is no justification for AZT therapy. p15 112 The short term improvement of animals and patients when subjected to radiation or toxic substances in general is called hormesis or the hormetic effect. It is one of the best documented, and least discussed subjects in radiation biology or toxicology. A recent (pretty good) review has been written on this subject, which contains most of the recent references to other reviews. [See Patricia J. Neafsey, Mech, of Ageing and Development 51, 1-31 (1990)] It would not surprise this reviewer if treatment with any toxic substance (including irradiation) would lead to an equivalent improvement. p16 14 Over 80% of the American AIDS cases are 20 to 45 year old males (15),... This reviewer reads: "72% of the American AIDS cases are 20-44 year-old males (15, Table 8 [115,764/161,073 = 0.719))..etc. this notation mimics what is seen in ref 15. p17 113 to end "..drugs are responsible.." see also line 17 "..can be prevented..." This reviewer recommends that the conditional be used: "..drugs could be responsible..." and "..ol be prevented.;.." This reviewer thinks that the author will be in a stronger position by assuming a position suggested in the second paragraph of this review. Controlled intervention studies have not yet been performed putting
