Dear Dr. Bogorad,
Thank you for your letter of June 18. You indicate that you still do not
feel that you can publish my paper "The Role of Drugs in the Origin of AIDS"
because you "believe that the most substantial objections raised in the
reviews... remain." However, you did not identify the nature of these
"substantial objections". I think it is your responsibility as an editor to
identify these objections, allowing me finally to prepare an acceptable paper.
Further, I welcome your offer to let me submit a revised form of my
paper to another member of the Academy for communication to the
Proceedings. In order to explore this possibility I need your reassurance that
the revised and resubmitted paper will be judged on its own merit and not
prejudiced by its prior drafts. I think it would be unfair to burden another
academy member with more than the most current draft of this paper.
Finally, I appreciate that you now feel that I try to "present a message
on the pathogenic potential of psychoactive drugs [that] is serious and
carefully considered."
