Thank you for you letter f June 12.
First, with respect to the latest revision o our manuscript on "The Role-of
Drugs in the Origin of AIDS": While you have. sponded to a few of the specific,
comments of one of the reviewers, I believe at the most substantial objections 4"
raised in the reviews that I sent you re in. Accordingly, I do not feel that
we can publish the present paper.
Second, in response to your letter of June 12: u are, of course, perfectly
free to have the paper communica to the Pr i.n s by another Academy member.
I should explain, however, that while I appreciate the efforts made by Academy
members in their service as editors and value their views in this role, papers
are not automatically passed through for printing when they are communicated
anymore than they are when contributed. I appreciate your interest in saving me
the "burden of finding appropriate reviewers..." I regret that having a paper
come through-as a communication from a member doesn't necessarily save me that
burden but I thank you for your consideration.
I do recognize that your efforts to present a message on the pathogenic
potential of psychoactive drugs is serious and carefully considered. If I did
not, I would not have put so much effort into the evaluation and consideration'
of your manuscript.
