Somewhere else in the paper the authors state that "it is
now known that HIV can readily be transmitted through mucosal tissue,"
But of which organ? Certainly, oral polio vaccine was not administered
through the orifices which are susceptible to the transmission of HIV
infection,
I feel the same as Albert Sabin that there is no way for
me to point out all the errors and distortions of the authors in their
paper. If I were asked whether this article is acceptible for
publication in a scientific journal, I certainly would not consider this
likely.
It is a pity that instead of pursuing an untenable hypothesis,
Elswood and Stricker omit the fact that vaccination of children in the
then Belgian Congo resulted in 53 to 71% protection against paralytic
poliomyelitis during the 1958-1959 epidemic (Plotkin, S., et al*, Bull.
World Health Org., 1960, 22, 215).
