Enclosed is a copy of the committee's final report. I must stress once more:
the contents of this report are confidential and may not be publicized prior to
the committee's press conference on October 22. I trust you to honor these
conditions.
Per our conversations, I understand that Science will publish your article in
its Friday, October 23rd issue. Some questions:
--Doesn't Science mail out an earlier edition to medical reporters? On what
day would they receive the October 23rd edition, and what is Science's
experience with these reporters honoring its news embargo?
--If the above statement is true, I'd be interested in obtaining one of these
early copies. Is that possible?
--Were you planning to call other scientists for their reaction to the report?
While I would not presume to interfere with your methods for researching or
writing any story, I'm concerned about protecting the confidential nature of
this report until October 22, when the committee members have chosen to
release the report publicly. How do you suggest handling this scenario?
STo confirm: you are scheduled to interview Dr. Claudio Basilico and Dr.
David Ho by telephone on Wednesday, October 14, at 11 a.m. (Basilico can't
make it any earlier). They plan to call you soon after 11 a.m., but if you're
