FACSCount": A NEW SYSTEM TO STANDARDIZE
MONITORING OF HIV PATIENTS
AMSTERDAM, July 20 -- A new dedicated, self-contained system to
monitor the progression of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
is being announced here at the Eighth International Conference on
AIDS.

Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems, the medical
technology leader in cell analysis and research, has developed
the FACSCount, a simple method for obtaining an individual's
absolute CD4 and CD8 T Lymphocyte counts in white blood cells.
The company expects the new technology to provide
considerable cost savings compared with current methodologies an
to decrease site-to-site variability in CD4 measurement.
Pre-clinical trials have been conducted since November 1991
and full clinical trials in the United States are expected to
begin in early 1993. The system is expected to be available in
countries outside the United States by early 1993.
