CRITIQUE 1: Significance: This is a resubmitted application from a new investigator which was first reviewed in Feb/Mar 2000 and returned without a score for amendment. This and the earlier application propose a longitudinal study (using the Baltimore MACS cohort) on the effect of beta-chemokines on HIV disease progression. Given our current understanding of beta-chemokines and HIV coreceptor usage (significant parts of which were taught to us by the Investigator), such a longitudinal study is important in the sense that it might illuminate the effect that beta-chemokines can have on HIV disease progression and shftsin vihra1 phenotype-n--v-ivo. in-so-doing, data-from s-ucha study might also provide insights about the composition and timing of therapeutic strategies using beta-chemokines in HIV disease. In the previous review of this application, concerns were raised in the following areas: (a) that the Preliminary Data did not clearly show a definitive correlation between beta-chemokine production and HIV infection; (b) that it may be difficult to interpret data about "disease progression" in the setting of HAART (currently administered to many if not all of the prospective subjects to be evaluated longitudinally); (c) that it would be useful to study Date released: 08/01/00 Date Printed: 08/01/00
