[Letter to Bernadine Healy from Jon Cohen]
TO: DR. HEALY FROM: JON COHEN October 9, 1992 Dear Dr. Healy, As promised, here are data from the Walter Reed trial with the gpl60 therapeutic vaccine that have yet to be published. These are copies of slides that Redfield presented in Amsterdam. (He gave me these and I believe because they were publicly presented they are public record.) In essence, they show that vaccinees had drops in their peripheral blood viral burden as compared to patients in natural history studies. Though these results are far from conclusive--there are no matched controls here, the sample size is small, who knows what the error bars or assay validations are, peripheral blood and lymph node viral loads can vary greatly--I think they do deserve the label "promising." For many in the field, in fact, I think this data is the most persuasive yet presented that the therapy is having positive results (positive CD4 data as published in the June 1991 New England Journal and discussed repeatedly at public forums has swayed few researchers because of the vagaries of CD4 counts). I'm also faxing a copy of my article that comes out today. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Jon Cohen 3445 17th St. NW Washington, DC 20010 202-332-9564 6c-DliiI IIiI iIII I II I IiIII i iiI571095.0199.113 5571095.0199.113
