[Letter to Jacob John from Jon Cohen]

8. How much paralytic polio does India have? How accurate are the numbers? 9. Several people have suggested to me that WHO does not want to change its policy because it might lose the trust it has worked hard to earn in developing countries. Has WHO ever communicated any such message to you or people you work with? Have you ever been encouraged not to publish data about IPV? 10. Do you think poliovirus will be eradicated by 2000 with the current OPV-only program? Do you think adding IPV to the schedule, as Bill Foege proposed in Delhi last January, would make eradication more probable? 11. Have I spelled your name correctly and what is your title and position? Are you a virologist? I would be interested in any other thoughts you might have on this subject. I have a strange fax set up. If you reach my answering machine, after you hear the tone you can access the fax by pressing "5" and then "*." If I pick up the line, you can go ahead and fax normally. I will be out of town from September 11-19, though my fax will be up and running during that time. I very much look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Jon Cohen 3445 17th St. NW Washington, DC 20010 VOICE AND FAX: 202-332-9564
