[Letter to Ann London from Jon Cohen]
January 15, 1992 TO: Ann London FROM: Jon Cohen VIA FAX: 301-402-0120 Dear Ms. London, I am writinq a book on AIDS vaccine research for Delacorte Press and, as per the Freedom of Information Act, would like to obtain copies of all correspondence to and from Dr. Anthony Fauci about AIDS vaccine development and testing. Specifically, at the 20 May 1991 National Advisory Allerqy and Infectious Disease Council meeting, Dr. Fauci spoke of correspondence he has had with Congress and foreiqn officials regarding efficacy trails of AIDS vaccine. Some of this includes correspondence with Sen. Mark Hatfield and with officials from Thailand and Australia. I am also interested in correspondence with industry, academia, the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, the US Army, Agency for International Development, State Department, White House, and any related intra-NIH/PHS memoranda that do not fall outside of the Freedom of Information Act. It is difficult to be specific, but the interested parties I know of at each organization are as follows (though others may well be the contacts): Industry: MicroGeneSys (Frank Volvovitz), Chiron, Repligen (Sanford Smith), Merck, Chiron, Immune Response (Jim Glavin, Jonas Salk, Dennis Carlo), Bristol-Myers/Oncogen (George Todaro), Genentech, Immuno (Johann and Martha Eibl), Viral Technology (Allan Goldstein), Pasteur Merieux. Academia: Duke University's Dani Bolognesi, Australian National University's Gordon Ada (formerly Johns Hopkins), Johns Hopkins' Mary Lou Clements, Marie and Pierre Curie University's Daniel Zagury, University of Brussels's Arsene Burny, University of Washington's Lawrence Corey, UC Davis's Murray Gardner, Harvard's Ronald Desrosiers, Vanderbilt's David Karzon, and Paul Ehrlich Institute's Reinhard Kurth. WHO: Jonathan Mann, Jose Esparza, Lars Kallings, Michael Merson and David Heymann. CDC: Helene Gayle and James Curran. US Army: Edward Tramont, Donald Burke, and Robert Redfield. USAID: Jeffrey Harris. 11 1 IIIIII I 1IIIII llIIII IIIIII IIII IIIIIIIIIIl ll III 5571095.0199.044
