[Letter to Jonas Salk from Jon Cohen]
January 2, 1992 TO: JONAS SALK FROM JON COHEN The reference in the Carter book I spoke of appears on pages 100-101. Carter writes that on July 12, 1950, you submitted a qrant application to the National Foundation that read, in part, ''It will be necessary either to discover, or to develop artificially, strains of low pathoqenicity that would still retain the capacity to infect and immunize without producinq the paralytic consequences....'' As explained on pages 95-96, this was a modification of a letter you had written to Harry Weaver the month before that spoke of immunizing institutionalized children with an experimental vaccine made from poliovirus inactivated with ultraviolet light and an oil emulsion adjuvant. If you get a chance to make a list of people you think I should interview and where I might find them, I would put it to good use.
