[Letter to Alan Schultz from Jon Cohen]
TO: DR. ALAN SCHULTZ FROM: JON COHEN September 9, 1991 Alan, I just wanted to follow-up on the reference to the F2 breeding of chimps. Geza Teleki, the chimp guy I mentioned to you who works with Jane Goodall, tells me the best reference about the limits of captive breeding is a chapter in Primates: The Road to Self-Sustaining Populations, 1986, Benirschke (editor), Springer (publisher). The chapter to see is "Captive Chimpanzee Populations: Past, Present, Future," by U.S. Seal. I'm also FAXing a more anecdotal article by Jeremy Cherfas that ran in the 27 March 1986 New Scientist; it obliquely discusses the problem (see page 4). Teleki tells me that the essence of the issue--which is discussed in the book chapter--is that the NIH's calculations regarding a self-sustaining captive chimp population are overly optimistic. If you do dig up the book reference, I'd love to get a copy.... Jon 111 III 11111 11 II 1 Il l1 111111111 IIII 5571095.0199.027
