Post article.
The Post article, in case you didn't read it, is about
then-Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz saving two drowning
girls. When he arrives ashore, the article says he told
the onlookers that he was repaying a favor. Years
before, the article states, Wirtz's three-year-old son,
Philip, was saved from drowning by Jonas Salk.
Both Willard and Philip Wirtz are in the D.C. phone
book so I called them. Unfortunately (for me, at
least), the Post is inaccurate. Philip Wirtz was saved
from drowning by Donna, not Jonas, Salk. You might want
to add this footnote to the collection so that some
future historian (or wild-eyed Hollywood-type) doesn't
make the mistake of crediting Jonas Salk with saving
one too many lives.
I'll be in San Diego next week. If I get some free
time, I'm going to try and stop by the collection.
