he could set up two neutralization assays in his lab that looked
identical but, in one day's time, yielded different results.
o The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research devised a 6-stage
system to track the progression of AIDS in the HIV-infected. The
system links T4 cell counts, antibody profiles, and AIDS
complications, and, ultimately, could be a useful tool when
treating patients. It's been used in the military and in Europe,
but in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and most
researchers have all but ignored it, sticking with two stages:
HIV-infected and AIDS. I'm not sure where the story goes, but
I've spoken with Robert Redfield, the zealous Walter Reed
researcher who devised the scheme, and conflict is rife.
Right now, I propose doing the Nairobi story. Plummer's project
is begging to be covered by someone, and in all likelihood it
will be done sooner rather than later.
