It will explicitly address the tension between risk and vulnerability reduction implicit in HIV prevention, as well as the role of education in securing reductions in the incidence and prevalence of HIV. While not focusing in detail upon the evaluation of specific types of programme and/or intervention, the session will provide an opportunity for participants to identify the key elements of a comprehensive response that need to be in place if HIV prevention is to be successful within the present context. It will also highlight research gaps and opportunities and the methodologies most appropriate to meeting these needs. TUSYO4 25 Years of Community Response to HIV/ AIDS: Where do we go from here? Symposium Venue: Session Room 4, Level 800 FR Date: Tuesday 15 August Time: 14:15-15:45 Moderator: Lucky Mazibuko, South Africa This panel discussion will commemorate 25 years of community response to HIV/AIDS while plotting a course for the future. Five well-respected community leaders working in different parts of the movement will reflect on the current state of activism/advocacy in HIV/AIDS and discuss what we need to do to make real progress. Questions discussed will include: Are there lessons from the past we are forgetting? What is the current status of the GIPA principles? Is there still a role for radical activism? How do we work both locally and globally? How do we help build capacity of vulnerable communities? How does the movement foster new leadership? How do we confront AIDS fatigue and burnout? To promote audience participation and greater dialogue, this session will be repeated in the Global Village in a more open format. 14:15 Panel discussion TUSYO401 D. Odhiambo Kenya TUSYO402 P.
