Raphael teaches and practices general internal medicine at
Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Centre in Boston, where his medical practice serves mostly
Latinos, gay/lesbian/transgender/bisexual people, and people
with HIV infection. He is an author of many publications
including: The Poetry of Healing: A Doctor's Education in
Empathy, Identity and Desire. His newest collation of poetry,
Landscape with Human Figure, was published in April 2002,
and won the Gold Medal from Foreword in poetry.

Digging Roots is pleased to present this work to the conference
because HIV/AIDS in the Aboriginal populations is the
highest of any cultural group in Canada. Since the numbers
are expected to increase it is a responsibility for indigenous
peoples to stop, prevent and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.
