Renewing HIV Prevention: Solutions for Today’s Challenges

Harold W. Jaffe, M.D. Since September 2001, Dr. Harold Jaffe has served as Acting Director of the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHSTP) at CDC. In this capacity, Dr. Jaffe addresses a broad range of concerns related to the prevention of HIV, STDs and TB. A commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Jaffe was promoted to the rank of Assistant Surgeon General in 1998. Prior to his current assignment, Dr. Jaffe served as Director of the Division of AIDS, STD, and TB Laboratory Research, and Associate Director for HIV/AIDS in CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases. From 1992 until 1995, Dr. Jaffe served as the Director of CDC's Division of HIV/AIDS, and prior to that he served as the Deputy Director for Science within the HIV/AIDS Division. In 1981, Dr. Jaffe joined the CDC Task Force assigned to study the earliest cases of AIDS. Prior to that he served as a Clinical Research Investigator at CDC's Venereal Disease Control Division. A physician-scientist trained in epidemiology, Dr. Jaffe has a specialty in infectious diseases. Dr. Jaffe has also been a Visiting Professor at both the Chester Beatty Laboratories, Institute of Cancer Research and the Department of Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital in London. He has been a Fellow in Infectious Diseases at the University of Chicago, and has served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He has also been a member (Ex-officio) of the AIDS Research Advisory Committee, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH, and a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and Human Retrovirology. A prolific researcher and writer, Dr. Jaffe has 128 publications to his name, including many related to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and AIDS. His AIDS-related publications have ranged from studies of transfusion-associated AIDS to AIDS among men who have sex with men (MSM). His more recent publications have looked at highly-active antiretroviral therapies and cancer incidence.
