To better understand how the HIV/AIDS epidemic is affecting men and women, it is critical we look at race and risk by gender. Cumulative Toll: AIDS Cases and Deaths through June 2001 AIDS Cases As of June 2001, 793,026 AIDS cases have been reported in the U.S., including 653,808 cases reported among men and 139,217 among women. A total of 8,994 AIDS cases have been reported among children (ages 12 and under). By race/ethnicity, 337,035 AIDS cases have been reported among whites, 301,784 among Blacks, and 145,220 among Hispanics. AIDS Deaths Since the beginning of the epidemic, 457,667 deaths were reported through June 2001, including 389,018 among men and 68,649 among women. Of these, 210,031 whites, 163,378 Blacks, and 79,650 Hispanics with AIDS have died.
