Therefore, the institutional visibility of such organizations in the media is mostly weak and not continuous. Work description: In order to fill the gap in the communication between community and the media, Grupo Pela VIDDA-RJ, the first Brazilian PWA organization, created the "AIDS & Imprensa" Booklet, a guide to the NGO's. Its goal is to provide the information and advices how to keep a good relationship with the media, and how to guarantee the quality of information on AIDS at the media vehicles. Methodology: A previous selection of media professionals, AIDS NGOs activists, and opinion makers has been made, in order to contribute to the production of the booklet. Thirty questionnaires have been sent, and 17 have been responded (57%). From the answers, most common obstacles for the good communication between the NGOs and the media have been identified. Moreover, the image that the press has from the NGOs and vice-versa has been raised, to clarify identities, and to have a good framework for the publication. The guide could then be issued, focusing how to work with the media and the press, how to suggest an agenda for the press, how to deal with critical situations and a glossary of technical terms. Resluts and lessons learned: Up to late 2001, over 1,500 booklets have been distributed to NGOs, journalists, editors, editors-in-chief and other professionals on communication in the country The receptivity was very high, and many professionals highlighted the initiative was very important to overcome obstacles and clarify issues and roles on AIDS. Recommendations: To establish a clear media and press policy is fundamental to any community organization which aims to have visibility to its work, and to bring about clarity in the information on AIDS to the public.
