Social Marketing Company, Bangladesh, Smc tower (7th floor), 33, Banani C/A, Dhaka-1213, Bangladesh Issues: open discussion on issues and problems related to sex is still not a common practice in Bangladesh. They remain shelled with whatever they have - belief, taboos, superstitions and above all STDs. youth and adolescents do practice risky sex behavior and are also psychologically shattered with the myths and false belief on sexual health. Description: Social Marketing Company (SMC) undertook the venture of TELEJIGGASHA (counseling through telephone) to meet the demand of personalized counseling on sexual health in anonymity. Anybody can dial up and hook on to the trained counselors sitting in separate booths for males and females. Lessons learned: There is huge unmet demand for confidential counseling on STDs and sexual health among the people. During May 2001 - December 2001, on average, 70 calls were received per working day. Male callers made up 57% of the total calls while females the rest. Unmarried males (56%) seemed to be perturbed, more than married ones, with psycho-sexual problems that surfaced after marriage in case of females (47%). Students came up heavily (26.5%). Among females, 24% were housewives. The query areas are: STD (5.84%), HIV/AIDS (4.35%), Sexual health (34.76%), Reproductive Health (19.45%). The males were more concerned on sexual health than their counterparts (56.62% versus 6.5%). Reproductive health constituted 28.5% of queries asked by the females as against 12.44% of the queries from males who were also more concerned about STDs, HIV/AIDS than the females (8.35%, 6.34% v 2.6%, 1.78%). Shakirov1, B. Zhusupov 2, S. Valieva1, G. Suleimenova3. 1Research Institute of Skin and Venereal Diseases, Almaty, Kazakhstan; 2Center of Public Opinion Investigations, Almaty Kazakhstan; 3Almaty City Center of AIDS Prevention and Control, Almaty, Kazakhstan Men having sex with men (MSM) are known to be vulnerable towards infecting with HIV. Unisexual contacts between men were punishable according to the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan until early ninetieths. For that reason MSM were remained one of the most hidden communities. Behavioral survey conducted among 100 MSM in Almaty in 2001 had elucidated the following.35 per cent of MSM used drugs with one forth of them injecting heroin. Anal sex was practiced by 99 per cent of respondents. During the last 6 months 20 per cent of MSM had sex with ten and more partners and 29 per cent of MSM had sex with only one partner. The number of sexual partners was correlated directly with the use of drugs. 9 and 19 per cent of respondents used condoms during sexual intercourse with cohabitant and non-cohabitant partners accordingly. During the last 12 months symptoms of STI such as anal and genital ulcers or blisters, urethral or anal discharge, pain and burning with urination and scrotal swelling had developed in half of respondents. The spread of STI among MSM using drugs was significantly higher than among MSM who do not use drugs. Half of respondents were not ready to appeal for STI care in the official health care settings if necessary. Satisfactory level of awareness in the issues of HIV transmission and prevention was expressed by one-forth of respondents with strong direct correlation between level of awareness and using condoms. Low awareness of MSM in HIV prevention issues, high-risk behavior and limited access to information, counseling and STI care were selected as principal targets for addressing interventions. Development of information materials, outreach, safer sex and condom promotion and provision of a referral service for MSM infected with STI were established in Almaty. Governmental structures have taken a leadership in these activities. Strong cooperation and support to NGOs dealing with HIV/AIDS prevention is sustained. Wei1, J.Q. Zhu2, Z.K. Liang2. 1 The 3rd Hospital of Hebei Medical University, The 3rd Hospital of Hebei Medical University, Ziqiang Road No. 139, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province 050051, China; 2Division of Disease Control, Department of Health, Hebei Province, Shijiazhuang, China Background: 1) To access reasonable and effective health education model for AIDS prevention and control in the rural community in Hebei. 2) To develop the knowledge on AIDS among the rural population. 3) To evaluate the process and outcome of the health education activities. Methods: We selected three villages (10,000 population) based on different economic levels: developed, developing and poor. The interactive small groups will be established with a facilitator for each one will assist the promotion of the project after they finished the training course of AIDS. The four types of questionnaires have been provided to the residents, the leaders of village, local doctors and mobile population. Multi-type of health education activities has been taken based on the respective characters of geographical, human and social environment, facilities and resources among the three villages. Results: 1) It has be identified that the effective use of the local facilities such as cablecasting, closed-circuit television, window dressing and poster has more priority for health education in rural area. 2) For AIDS campaigns, there is more cultural representation and acknowledge as it will encourage the use of local resources, talents, skills as well as examples, stories and situation that the people can identify with. 3) The supportive environment played a great role for health promotion in the rural community. 4) Total evaluation should be very important for reflection on health education program, for which the present results will apply to all over the rural community in Hebei next year. Conclusion: There is widespread lack of knowledge about the transmission of HIV and about effective means of prevention among the mobile population. Rural people need to have access to HIV information and education in order to know the risk and responsibilities, to clear misconceptions, disbelieves and misunderstanding in societies since there is low prevalence of HIV infection in Hebel province.
