AO Fundacid Barcelona SIDA 2002 EdificiApollo X Balmes 2oo, atic 9e o8oo6 Barcelona Spain Tel: +34 93 218 2404 Fax: +34 93 217 o188 E-mail: [email protected] Sientists and Health CareWorkers Committed to HIV/AIDS Fundaci6 Barcelona SIDA 2002 The Fundaci6 Barcelona SIDA 2002 (Barcelona AIDS 2002 Foundation) is a non-profit foundation which was created with two aims: firstly to organize the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona O(July 7-12, 2002) and secondly to encourage multi-disciplinary research to improve HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment. The organization of the XIV International AIDS Conference is being carried out through the Conference Secretariat which was set up in Barcelona in October 2000. After the Conference, the Foundation will continue with its other work of implementing research projects to improve and extend intervention programs in the biomedical and public health fields, both nationally and internationally. It has particular interest in setting up projects in co-operation with Latin America, the Caribbean and other Mediterranean countries. The Fundaci6 Barcelona SIDA 2002 will enhance Spain's HIV/AIDS biomedical and public health research agenda, facilitating the implementation of collaborative studies among Spanish groups and agencies. More specifically, the Fundaci6 will promote the participation of the Spanish scientific community in international research aimed to improve the implementation of HIV/AIDS preventive care and treatment programs in less developed countries and regions. The technical experience of the Spanish scientists and their cultural links with agencies and organizations of the Latin American and Caribbean region are of special interest. The International AIDS Society The International AIDS Society (IAS) represents the world's professional society for scientists, healthcare and public health experts, and others engaged in HIV/AIDS prevention, control and care. The IAS has more than o,ooo members representing more than 130 countries. The IAS has a large number of affiliated regional and national HIV/AIDS societies such as the Argentine, British, Canadian, European, Indian, Malaysian, Spanish, Tanzanian, and United States societies. The IAS is a worldwide organisation founded in 1988. It is politically and financially independent and can speak freely as a voice of reason in AIDS controversies. The IAS organises the series of multidisciplinary International AIDS Conferences such as the one held in Durban, South Africa in 2000, the XIV International AIDS Conference in Barcelona, and in Bangkok in 2004. The ist IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis and Treatment in Buenos Aires represented a new initiative. The next conference in this series will take place in Paris, July 13-17, 2003. The IAS co-sponsors the conferences on Global Strategies for the Prevention of H IV Transmission from Mother to Child, the Microbicide conferences, and several regional AIDS conferences. The IAS runs three major global programmes: IAS Share is the not-for-profit educational programme of the IAS, focused on clinical care and prevention of H IV infection, primarily directed towards developing countries and countries in economic transition. E-mail: [email protected] IAS-CTP is a clinical trials partnership initiative to establish a worldwide alliance of key research groups to help design and monitor clinical trials in developing countries with a view to identifying efficacious, safe, cost-effective and durable strategies for the treatment and management of HIV-infected individuals in those countries. E-mail: [email protected] IAS-WHO Global Monitoring of HIV Drug Resistance This initiative is being developed in collaboration with the World Health Organisation. Designed to face the emerging problem of HIV drug resistance, this programme will collect and distribute data on the circulation of drug-resistant HIV strains in treated and untreated individuals, and make this data available as a resource for scientists and clinicians worldwide.
