Skills Building Workshops Tuesday July 9 Building the Foundation for Advocacy and Social SB26 Mobilization in Resource Poor Settings Venue: Room 5:5B Time: 1o:3o - 13:3o0 Language: English Target Audience: People from NGOs, medical personnel, social workers, program managers This workshop is designed to build the foundation for advocacy and social mobilization as key elements for the prevention, control and management of HIV/AIDS in resource poor settings. Participants from NGOs will understand their strengths and weaknesses and learn to prioritize community needs and share knowledge on how to confront the epidemic within the context of resource poor settings. Language: English Target Audience: Health and social service professionals who work with people with HIV or in HIV prevention This workshop is a participatory experience in which health professionals can reflect on how to improve Transcultural Communication in working with persons with HIV of cultural backgrounds different from theirs. It will stress the importance of self-observation on such topics as: the self as part of a culture, transcultural communication difficulties, cultural meanings (body, illness, wellness, sexuality, etc.), cultural styles of communication, race and privilege, immigration (loss and grieving), class and transculturalism. We will explore the methods used to help people reflect on their personal concepts around sexual health. Participants will try to define sexual health, will look at the factors that contribute to that definition and explore different methodologies for effective intervention work. Facilitators: R Mufioz, K Zaragoza, S Martf, Stop Sida, Spain Addressing Gender Issues in HIV/AIDS Prevention: Strategies from the South African "Men as Partners" SB28] Program Venue: Room 5:6B Time: o10:30o - 14:30 Language: English Target Audience: Social workers, health educators, program administrators, professionals interested in addressing male involvement and gender issues This workshop will expose participants to a series of interactive, highly personal and reflective activities that explore societal messages about men's and women's roles, relationships between the sexes, power imbalances based on gender, and gender-based violence. All of the activities will be conducted by South African facilitators and EngenderHealth staff who have used these activities in communities in South Africa. The workshop will explore how these activities can help prevent HIV transmission and how they can be adapted for use in different communities and programs. Facilitators: A Levack, EngenderHealth, Thailand; B Lesetedi, Planned Parenthood Association of South Africa; A Rebombo, Hope Worldwide, South Africa; D Peacock, Consultant, EngenderHealth, United States Interactive Teaching Methods in Work with Children and Adolescents on Life Skills, Sexuality, SB301 STDs/HIV/AIDS, Sexual Abuse and Substance Abuse Venue: Room 2A Time: 14:30- 17:3o Language: English Target Audience: Counselors of children/adolescents, HIV/AIDS counselors, school teachers, college teachers, social workers, juvenile delinquent rehabilitation professionals, anti-child sexual abuse activists This workshop is designed for anyone who deals with children and older youth to equip them with the skills, vocabulary, innovative techniques and new ideas on how to deal with the difficult topics of sexuality and high risk behavior without awkwardness and apprehension. We will introduce ways of conveying attitudes and behavior modification instead of merely dealing with facts and giving information. Facilitators: D Paul-Prasad, M Chaturvedi, L lagannathan, Rotary TTK Blood Bank, India SSB31 Accessing Reduced-Priced Antiretrovirals Venue: Room 2B Time: 14:3o - 17:3o Language: English Target Audience: Representatives of NGOs in developing countries, representatives of governmental and non-for-profit supply centers in developing countries (purchasers), responsible persons for procurement of national AIDS programs in developing countries, pharmaceutical In this workshop participants will have an overview of different steps involved in gaining access to reduced priced ARVs. Case studies of success stories will be presented and MSF experiences will be shared. Participants will learn about prices, patents, registration and quality. They will also work through hypothetical access challenges and report on their experiences.
