It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Barcelona, the capital of the Catalan region, for this meeting dedicated to research and action for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS around the globe. There is no country unaffected by this epidemic and, since the last Conference in Durban, the number of cases of people living with HIV/AIDS in the world has grown from 36 to 40 million. In such a context, "action" means co-operation and movement forward by all sectors working together to change the course of this epidemic. We have worked to make this Conference both a gathering of researchers from all over the world and, following the UNGASS meeting on HIV/AIDS, a renewed call for political commitment and action. Conference sessions have been organized to present new data and a comprehensive review of efforts from all countries and in all disciplines - from laboratory to field interventions and health policies. The Scientific and Community components of the program have collaborated to coordinate and bridge interests, experience and knowledge from all the 7 tracks of the program. Please, take time to review this Official Program and to become familiar with the enhanced Conference format of Barcelona AIDS 2002, which includes new tracks and new session formats. The XIV International AIDS Conference is the first of the XXI century and the first to be held in a Spanish-speaking country. Enrich yourselves at the Conference and enjoy the charm of Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain - its languages, culture, architecture, cuisine and people. We hope that the Barcelona Framework approach has opened the XIV International AIDS Conference to all sectors involved in the fight against this pandemic. Your participation in the Conference is crucial and we also hope that it will be a rewarding experience both professionally and personally. iI
