Barcelona and Personal Safety The Conference Organizers wish all delegates an enjoyable stay in Spain; however, we advise delegates to be especially attentive to personal belongings. Barcelona, like most large cities around the world, has seen an increase in street crime, predominantly pick pocketing and handbag snatching. You are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions in principal tourist areas such as the Rambla, Barrio G6tico and other tourist sites, airport, beaches, train stations, etc. To ensure that you have a trouble-free stay at the Barcelona Conference, the Conference recommends the following personal safety measures: * Spanish law requires that you carry official identification documents at all times. Photocopy your passport, travel documents, prescriptions, etc. before leaving home. * Keep your passport, important documents and the majority of your money in your hotel safety deposit box, not in your room. Carry a photocopy of your passport or identity documentation and only a limited amount of cash while you are out. * Only use certified metered taxis (yellow and black) from the airport and in Barcelona. * The Euro has become the official Spanish currency. The Spanish peseta is no longer a valid currency. Be cautious of scams to exchange your currency for the peseta. If you have any questions or concerns while at the Conference, please contact the Information Desks. For further information, please visit http://www.barcelona-online.es/eng/turisme/pracinfo-preven.htm, http://www.barcelona-tips.com/ or http://travel.state.gov/spain.htmI. Business Center The Business Center will provide computer, fax, and photocopying services for participants on a pay-per-use basis. The Business Center is located in Palacio 5, level 0. Childcare Center Facilities for childcare are provided for children who were preregistered and confirmed by May 31, 2002. Facilities are offered for children from birth to lo years of age. The facilities are within walking distance of the Conference venue and have been provided by the Institute of Education of Barcelona. Conference Safety The Conference organizers have developed a coordinated security plan in conjunction with venue managers, private security firms, and local and national police services to provide a safe and secure environment for all participants. One of the goals of the Conference planners is to ensure an inclusive environment where everyone may openly express their views. To this end, we recognize the right to peaceful demonstration and protest, however, this right only extends to activities that do not result in bodily harm or property damage. Spanish law is quite specific in this area and must be recognized and respected. At registration, each Conference participant and exhibitor will receive his or her own credential which must be displayed to enter and be worn at all times while in Conference venues. This credential may only be used by the person to whom it is issued. The Conference reserves the right to withdraw the credential from any person not conforming to Conference Policy. Electronic Message Center The electronic message system will help you communicate with other participants at the Conference. First Aid Station A first aid station is located in Palacio 3, level 0. This emergency facility is available to all Conference participants and is staffed by people experienced in the care of people living with HIV. The Conference will facilitate medical care for emergencies. Emergencies are defined as problems that, following the criteria of the doctors in charge of emergency services, need to be addressed during the week of the Conference. Medication for chronic conditions (e.g., antiretrovirals) will not be available. For medical information or emergencies (both for national and private health services), please call 902 111 444 or consult directly with the First Aid Station at the Conference venue (Fira de Barcelona). Information Desks Information desks are located in Palacio 5, level 1 and Palacio 2 level 0. They will provide multilingual services for your inquiries about all aspects of the Conference. A lost and found service operates at the Information desk in Palacio 5, level 1. A message board can be found next to the Information desk in Palacio 5, level 1 of the Fira de Barcelona. Itinerary Builder This search system will give you an opportunity to look through the program and search by day and time, subject, author and affiliation. You can make your own program and itinerary and print it out. This service is available in the web cafes. Meals and Snacks Many luncheon and fast-food outlets are located within the Fira de Barcelona and around the perimeter of Palacio 3 (Plaga de l'Univers). These food outlets, open all day, offer a wide range of options from inexpensive snacks to leisurely dining. XIV International AIDS Conference BARCELONA - JULY 7-12 269
