It will focus on the steps of strategic planning and discuss how to work with populations that include men who have sex with men, sex workers and drug users - especially focusing on developing countries and countries where discrimination, stigma, legal barriers and human rights create a difficult environment. Part of the workshop will be centered on Magic. We will address interpersonal communication issues through magic effects and humor - strategies applicable to AIDS IEC programs. The workshop will also help build participative theatre strategies that can be useful for developing communication abilities, analyzing contextual factors affecting AIDS and promoting debate. Language: English Target Audience: Counselors, care givers, health workers, social workers and PLWHAs In this workshop participants will learn counseling and teaching techniques that will enable them to empower PLWHAs with long-term survival skills that are appropriate, affordable and locally available. It will provide guidelines on nutrition and health management and the opportunity to pool experiences and skills between the participants. Group work will be done on different topics which include: characteristics and attributes of HIV; how the immune system works and how to support it; the allies of HIV and how to avoid them; nutrition as therapy; alternatives to drugs; disclosure; grief and loss; and the strengths and weaknesses of support groups. Language: English Target Audience: Community-based outreach workers, clinic-based health educators, trainers of staff members, project coordinators, senior program staff, local health department officials The focus of this workshop is HIV risk reduction through behavior change. Participants will be offered a brief overview of the Transtheoretical model and will be able to discuss the challenges they encounter in their own outreach experiences. Participants will learn how to: tailor intervention messages to the needs of the client; understand the stages-of-changemodel, decisional balance and goal setting strategies; negotiate client-centered risk reduction goals; understand what techniques work at different stages. Role-plays will be used to practice conducting goal-based interventions. By the end of this workshop participants will understand some of the behavioral models used to reduce a person's risk and how to adapt these models to work effectively with their population. Facilitators: M Buitr6n, Harbor UCLA Research and Education Institute; ] Rodriguez, CSULB Center for Behavioral Research & Services, United States Evaluation, Implementation and Quality Assurance of HIV Rapid Tests in Resource-Constrained or SB48 Hard-to-Reach Communities Venue: Room 2A Time: 14:3o - 17:3o Language: English Target Audience: Laboratory professionals and AIDS program coordinators using or considering the use of HIV rapid tests in different settings The workshop focuses on issues around the use of HIV rapid tests for blood safety, VCT, PMCT, or other purposes in resource-constrained countries or hard-to-reach populations. Participants will discuss opportunities for prevention and options for revised testing protocols and explore the implications for changes in national programs and consensusbuilding through the interface of technology with national policy. The potential use of dried blood spot technology and methods for quality assurance will also be addressed. The process to become involved in the Coordinated Country Mechanism (CCM) will be examined in detail and the experiences of NGOs will be shared. This workshop will provide an opportunity for community based HIV/AIDS organizations to improve their knowledge of the issues and to identify ways to address those issues.
