Final Program [International Conference on AIDS (14th: 2002: Barcelona, Spain)]

Co ferece Prog I erVew SPunto de Encuentro (Community Forum) RAUXA- The Cultural Program I The Barcelona 2002 Community Forum - the Punto de Encuentro - provides a pre-Conference meeting place for communities from different regions to establish and re-establish connections. After a morning session where Forum delegates are welcomed to the Conference, there will be an afternoon session during which individuals and groups will be able to meet others in the same field, with the same interests, to exchange ideas, lessons learned, strategies and contact details. There is very little time to do this important networking activity once the Conference is under way, so it is hoped that communities will be able to take full advantage of this platform to, at the very least, start this process in a practical way. Skills Building Program Connecting Partners and Approaches Skill: a developed aptitude or ability Building: to construct or develop according to a plan Skills Building: developing a particular ability according to a plan The Skills Building Program of the XIV International AIDS Conference provides opportunities to meet, exchange and build on our skills. The program has been developed with the principal aim of advancing the development of new skills or improving existing skills through new learning partnerships, and new approaches to problem solving. The program seeks to compose a diversity of skills-sharing from different geographic and linguistic regions, HIV+ communities, and professional fields. The specific aims of the Program are: * To provide a platform for skills-sharing * To renew partnerships and create approaches for specific problem solving within corresponding or different professional fields * To promote knowledge and experience building between NGOs: developing new skills within communities * To promote knowledge and experience building in science: developing new skills between science professionals * To generate continued technical support by establishing human resource networks based on skills/needs partnerships. Skills Building Workshop Content Criteria: The selected workshops are both creative and innovative, and comply with at least one of the following criteria: 1. New strategies for better living with HIV: information access, treatment issues, emotional or physical changes, spiritual needs 2. Population-specific strategies for HIV prevention and harm reduction work 3. Gender, sexuality or age-specific issues 4. New ways of involving HIV affected communities, scientists, health and public policy professionals in the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services 5. New or strategic uses of scientific research, surveillance methods, treatment management or diagnostic tools, to cover the needs of health care and science professionals and community workers in different resource settings. RAUXA is a Catalan word designating genius, audacity, capacity of action, overflowing creativity.., a powerful metaphor which has guided the composition of the Cultural Program. RAUXA shows the interrelationship between a cultural life and a world living with HIV/AIDS by: * Offering art events as a way to understand what it is to live with HIV/AIDS * Providing a platform for expression to groups, individuals or entities * Making visible all the faces of the HIV/AIDS reality around the world * Incorporating the RAUXA agenda into as many parts of the Barcelona cultural agenda as possible Scholarships Program The Barcelona 2002 Scholarships Program has provided full or partial scholarships to over 1,500 Conference delegates. These scholarship recipients were selected from a pool of over 9,ooo applicants from around the world, according to a scoring system and a set of criteria established by the Scholarships Working Group - an internationally representative group of people nominated by the Conference Organizing Committee. The Scholarships team, made up of the Scholarships Unit and a group of volunteers, will be present throughout the Conference to provide support to delegates within the program so that their Conference experience can go as smoothly as possible. We would love to meet you and would be happy to welcome you in the Scholarships Lounge. Volunteers Program The goal of the Volunteers Program is to provide the XIV International AIDS Conference with a dedicated, committed and well-trained team of volunteers. The program has recruited approximately 1,250 volunteers who will offer extra hands, minds, knowledge, skills, and provide support for the smooth running of the Conference and help to ensure the well-being of all the delegates attending. The Program will provide volunteers with: * Knowledge, skills and experience related to HIV/AIDS * Confidence and new contacts * Pride in doing something worthwhile * The possibility to continue developing their social commitment through subsequent involvement in collective movements led by social organizations The possibility of working within the HIV/AIDS field on an ongoing basis Access to the Volunteers Program will allow the local community to increase its awareness of issues related to HIV/AIDS. It will promote active citizenship and encourage the expression of individual commitment through collective movements, enhancing human potential and the quality of daily life, thus building up human solidarity.
