Among AIDS cases diagnosed in 1997, Latinos accounted for the largest percentage of all AIDS cases (39%) for the first time. Census tracts with low median household incomes have the highest cumulative AIDS rates (384 per loo, ooo) with decreasing rates according to increasing median household incomes. Latinas represent 38% of female AIDS cases in LA. Description: The project is designed to assist participating Latinas with achieving parenting skills, family relations and expanding natural support networks; reducing risks and increasing protective factors associated with youth substance abuse; and increasing the community's capacities to address substance abuse and HIV/AIDS among Latina mothers. Services are gender specific and provided by culturally competent staff. The pretest is administrated after orientation and a follow-up is conducted 6 months after program initiation. Finally, a 12 month follow-up and discharge form are completed. Lessons Learned Since the inception of the program, the TCE - HIV project has served 130 participants. SLBPEG9057 ] The key to the problem: community participation in the fight against HIV/AIDS - an effective, realistic and acceptable approach Nivongabo, Come (Burundi) Issues: For a long time, the response to HIV/AIDS in Burundi has been centralised and sector-specific. However the HIV/AIDS problem in Burundi is a result of a combination of socio-cultural factors including taboos surrounding sex and sexuality, high illiteracy rates and other socio-cultural factors which cannot be addressed through a centralised approach that has been shown to be ineffective, expensive and non-sustainable Description: Save the Children, UK, is working with the communities of Gitega and Mwaro to combat the H IV epidemic. Our approach is based on a decentralised response in, for, and by the community. Using the Stepping Stones methodology SCUK has trained community peer leaders to animate and facilitate community responses to HIV/AIDS allowing communities to analyse their situation and propose realistic and acceptable solutions that take into account the socio-cultural aspects of their community. This participatory, community based approach benefits from a deep knowledge of socio-cultural aspects of the community to bring about results including: - Adopting responsible sexual behaviours - Breaking downs taboos around sex and sexuality - Increasing use of condoms - Increasing accessibility and availability of condoms through peer group distribution posts - Engaging community organisations in the fight against HIV/AIDS - Provide care and support for children affected by HIV/AIDS - Mobilising young people to develop Stop AIDS clubs Lessons learned: Community participation in the fight against HIV/AIDS is an effective approach. It is efficient, acceptable, realistic and gives sustainable results. Recommendations: The fight against HIV/AIDS must rely on community actions. It is at the community level that our fight against AIDS will be won or lost. Despite the fact that "For millions of girls and women worldwide it is clear that violence, AIDS, and human rights abuses are experienced as three strands of the same traumatic reality," the intersection of HIV and violence continues to be ignored by the majority of healthcare providers and service organizations. Description The purpose of this research is to review available literature regarding the relationships between HIV and violence as they pertain to women, identify policy implications, and make recommendations for the future. Lessons Learned: The intersection of these two epidemics - violence against women and HIV - is complex and XIV International AIDS Conference BARCELONA - JULY 7-12 Domain Instrument Pre-Test Mean Parent Stress Parenting Scale 74.6 STD/HIV STD/HIV Scale 11.2 Knowledge STD/HIV STD/HIV Scale 32.o0 Attitudes Drug Drug Scale 13.78 Knowledge Somatization Brief Symptom 3.35 Inventory (BSI) Obsessive/ BSI 5.13 Compulsive Post-test Dispersion Mean 64.6 SD=19.16 11.8 SD=2.1 Statistci P t=-2.61o.015 t=-1.669.104 34.3 SD=11.58 t=-1.142.262 14.97 SD=2.9 t=-2.52.o16 1.76 SD=3.56 t=2.723.010 2.28 SD=4.9 t=3.7.00l Based on preliminary findings are both positive and important in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS among drug using Latinas. The results suggest significant improvements and positive change in a number of important HIV risk factors. First, the perception of parent stress was decreased. While not statistically significant, there was a trend toward women's increased knowledge and attitudes regarding STDs/HIV. Although, STD/HIV knowledge and attitudes were not significantly changed, the respondents have shown an increase in drug knowledge (p <.o05) and a significant decrease in the use of illicit drugs (p <.05). Recommendation: Overall, the project has achieved a positive effect on participants risk behaviors associated with substance abuse and HIV.
