Helene D. Gayle Helene D. Gayle is the Director of the HIV/AIDS and TB Program for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She received her BA from Barnard College of Columbia University, New York, her MD from the University of Pennsylvania and MPH from Johns Hopkins University. She has worked for USAID and served as a health consultant to international agencies including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank and UNAIDS and has worked extensively in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Prior to assuming her current position, she was the Director for the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Lawrence Corey Dr Corey is currently head of the Program in Infectious Disease and a member of the Clinical Research Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington. At the University of Washington, in Seattle, he is a professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, where he is head of the Diagnostic Virology Division; a professor of medicine; and an adjunct professor in the departments of pediatrics and microbiology. In addition, Dr Corey is the Principal Investigator for the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. He is also an attending physician at hospitals associated with the University of Washington and with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr Corey received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1971. He completed his internship and residency from the university's Medical Center Hospitals in 1973 and then served for 2 years as an epidemic intelligence service officer at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. From 1975-77, he was senior fellow in medicine in the Division of Infectious Disease, University of Washington. He joined the faculty of the University of Washington in 1978 and has been a professor since 1984. A prolific writer, Dr. Corey has published over 400 original research papers, co-authored or served as editor of 11 books, and contributed chapters to innumerable books. He also serves as editor on numerous medical journals. His research has long focused on infectious and sexually transmitted diseases, particularly herpes simplex virus and human immunodeficiency virus. Kasia Malinowska-Sempruch Kasia Malinowska-Sempruch is the director of the International Harm Reduction Development program (IHRD) at the Open Society Institute, which has pioneered technical and financial support for harm reduction projects across Eastern Europe and countries of the former Soviet Union. Under her direction, IHRD, based in New York, has expanded its support to underserved communities such as prisoners, street children, and sex workers. After receiving her Masters of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania in the US in 1992, she worked with the United Nations Development Programme's HIV and Development Programme in both New York City and Poland. In her home country, Poland, she managed a $2.5 million program that supported HIV initiatives by the government and civil sectors. Among other things, she co-authored the first National AIDS Program for Poland and designed training programs for nurses, physicians, social workers, teachers, local policy makers, prison personnel, and psychologists. She is a doctoral candidate in public health at Columbia University and has made presentations on harm reduction issues at countless conferences and published widely on the topic. She was recently appointed to serve on the first international Technical Review Panel of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Suniti Solomon In 1986, Suniti Solomon MD and colleagues documented the first evidence of H IV infection in India. She set up the first voluntary testing and counseling center and an AIDS Research Group in Madras. In 1993, she founded YRG CARE, a non-profit center that offers HIV and sexuality education for adolescents and young adults, voluntary counseling and testing services, integrated care for people living with HIV, and also conducts medical and behavioral research. She offers services for pregnant women living with HIV. She is a member of the core team supporting the Prevention of Vertical Transmission of the NACO, India. Dr Solomon is the India site PI for NIMH Multisite HIV/STD Prevention Trial and for NIAID's HPTN in the FenwayBrown-YRG CARE HPTU. Her interests cover a range of HIV issues - biological and social research, community education and mobilization, bioethics, adolescent sexuality and HIV clinical and laboratory services. Dr Solomon is the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Trauma Care Consortium, a public service offering emergency ambulance services in the City of Chennai (Madras). She is also the Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Community Health, a project promoting community-based social marketing of reproductive health concepts, products and services. She has participated in several international conferences and has published original work in epidemiology, social and clinical aspects of HIV/AIDS. She has a vivid interest in nature. She lives in Madras with her husband, the distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Victor Solomon, and their son Sunil. Program Supplement
