What is the future of prevention in the era of ARVs and vaccine and microbicide trials? Tuesday, July 9, 2002 18:00-20:00 hrs. Fira de Barcelona, Hall 5 Room 5 This session will explore issues concerning the effect that anti-retroviral (ARV) treatments, as well as vaccine and microbicide trials are having on primary prevention efforts. There has been an upsurge in HIV incidence in cities such as San Francisco and Amsterdam, where ARVs have been available for many years and where acquiring HIV is no longer considered a death sentence. The panel is composed of epidemiological/behavioral researchers and health professionals with first-hand experience in addressing these new challenges in prevention in countries such as Brazil where ARVs are already being widely distributed, as well as Botswana and Uganda, where ARV's may become more available. New Approaches in HIV/AIDS Programming Wednesday, July 10, 2002 18:00-20:00 hrs. Fira de Barcelona, Hall 5 Room 5 HIV/AIDS threatens not only individuals and their families and communities, but also societies and the achievement of broader development goals. New approaches are being implemented that go beyond traditional public health interventions to protect development gains in the public and private sectors. This session will explore interventions to mitigate the economic and social impact of HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality on the education and health sectors and on communities and households. Speakers will highlight case studies and lessons learned from integrating HIV/AIDS into the educational system and from community-based programs which provide economic opportunities for families and youth.
