Ty Inc. Donates $1 Million For Children With HIV/AIDS Over the holiday season Ty Inc. conducted the first-ever 'Global Beanie Baby Vote' giving consumers the opportunity to determine whether the company would continue manufacturing the Beanie Baby through the year 2000. Paying 50 cents to cast an electronic ballot, Beanie fans around the world logged onto the toy maker's website and voted overwhelmingly to keep making the cuddly collectibles. Through Ty's more than three-for-one match, this incredible $1 million donation will benefit children around the world. "Our heartfelt thanks to all our friends at Ty Inc., especially Ty Warner, and Beanie Baby lovers worldwide," said Paul Glaser. "The partnership raised awareness of the impact of HIV and AIDS on children, while educating children about the positive effects of philanthropy." San Francisco Celebrates its First Elizabeth Glaser Day San Francisco Mayor Willie L.Brown, Jr. proclaimed January 21, 2000 as the city's first-ever 'Elizabeth Glaser Day.' Mayor Brown, U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and foundation leaders also presented this year's Elizabeth Glaser Scientists Awards to Drs. Paul Krogstad of the UCLA School of Medicine and Douglas Nixon of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center. Sen. Boxer also announced that her bill would authorize a five-year, $2 billion effort to combat AIDS overseas, with half of the appropriation directed to the nations of Africa. (Photo: Dr. Douglas Nixon, Susie Zeegen, Senator Barbara Boxer, Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr., Susan DeLaurentis and Dr. Paul Krogstad.) Many Bay Area public and elected officials, community leaders, representatives of the AIDS community, and foundation supporters joined us at an evening cocktail reception at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to honor the newest Elizabeth Glaser Scientists and commemorate this special day. The Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award was created to establish a team of outstanding scientists who collaborate on critical issues in pediatric HIV/AIDS.
