The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation's Programs and Accomplishments Co-founded in 1988 by Elizabeth Glaser, Susan DeLaurentis, and Susie Zeegen with the support of founding Board of Directors members Peter Benzian and Lloyd Zeiderman, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is the leading national foundation identifying, funding and conducting pediatric AIDS research worldwide. To date we have raised over $85 million. Research * The Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award, established in 1996, is the only named research award developed specifically and exclusively for pediatric AIDS research. The Foundation provides up to five scientists a year with up to $700,000 in support for five years of research, and will commit a maximum o $17 million to this program over the next five years. To date, we have committed $14.3 million to fund 21 Elizabeth Glaser Scientists. * To define research priorities, we conduct Think Tanks andWorkshops. We then move quickly to fund this research. To date we have held 13 Think Tanks and 15 Workshops. * We fund investigator-initiated research through our Individual Research Grants. Other on-going investigatorinitiated programs include our Scholar Awards and Short Term Scientific Awards. We have funded over $22.1 million in these programs to date. * Our own targeted research projects currently include The Ariel Project for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from Mother to Infant, and our new cutting edge Early Treatment Study. Funding for targeted projects totals over $14 million. * To encourage young students to enter the field of pediatric AIDS, our Student Intern Award Program provides opportunity to work with established pediatric AIDS researchers or clinicians. The Foundation has funded $784,000 for the Student Intern Award Program. Helping Others in Need * Through our Emergency Assistance Program we provide funds for unmet yet critical needs to hospitals and clinics nationwide which serve children with HIV/AIDS. The Foundation has funded 600 grants (totaling over $2.6 million) to over 180 different hospitals and clinics. Public Awareness * In conjunction with the Advertising Council, Inc., we have produced a national Public Service Announcement campaign with television, radio, and print ads in English and Spanish. The ads are targeted to all pregnant wom encouraging them to request a voluntary HIV test as part of their routine prenatal care. Research has shown tha proper treatment can reduce the rate of HIV transmission from an infected pregnant woman to her newborn. STo educate parents of elementary and pre-school age children about the realities that surround pediatric HIV/AII we produce and distribute our Parent Education Program, "HIV/AIDS: A Challenge to Us All." The Foundatic has distributed, free of charge, over 100,000 copies of this program in English and Spanish. * Beginning in 1996, the Foundation initiated funding for The Fernwood Project, an innovative HIV-awareness a prevention pilot program for pre-teens and teens. Educators, parents and other key members of each of the four selected communities are working together to empower students with the information and skills they need to make choices that will keep them safe, strong and healthy. While the specific focus is HIV/AIDS prevention through abstinence and safer sex, the underlying themes are learning to make conscious decisions independent of peer pressure, evaluating options and taking responsibility for one's actions and behaviors.
