[Promotional Materials, International Conference on AIDS (13th : 2000 : Durban, South Africa)]
Zachary Fried was five and a half when he died on December 15, 1987. A premature baby with many grave medical problems and multiple surgeries, Zack triumphed over all the traumas only to succumb to AIDS contracted from a transfusion. Until then, despite the pain, Zack lived a life of courage, joy, exuberance and giving. He particularly loved painting shirts for his family and friends. On the day before he died, although too weak to hold up his head, he was still asking his visitors: "Would you like me to make you a t-shirt or a sweatshirt? Would you like a cat or a train?" Zack's mother, Anna Belle Kaufman, knew she had to continue her son's gift giving as well as raise awareness and money for children with AIDS. Anna Belle reproduced Zack's cat and train design as well as his portrait of his beloved stuffed panda, Bumby, on both t-shirts and sweatshirts. SHIRTS BY ZACK joined the ELIZABETH GLASER PEDIATRIC AIDS FOUNDATION, whose slogan: "HOPE FOR CHILDREN WITH AIDS" appears on the back of the shirts. The t-shirts and sweatshirts are currently available through the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. All proceeds will go towards funding research and finding medical answers that will bring hope to children with AIDS.
