* Individual Research... Based on the priorities set by our Think Tanks, Workshops and surveys of our renowned Scientific Advisors, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation provides individual investigator-initiated grant funding in the form of our Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award, Basic Research Grants, and Short-term Scientific Awards. The Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award brings together some of the most innovative and cutting-edge researchers in the field of pediatric HIV/AIDS to work together to change the course of this disease. Begun in 1996, this award is given annually for five years to up to five outstanding scientists. Each of these recipients brings with them the knowledge, experience and potential in basic research areas critical to our goal of bringing about a-generation of children born free of HIV/AIDS. This award provides each investigator with up to $700,000 in support for five years of research, and ensures that the long-term efforts of each of these scientists are devoted to keeping pediatric AIDS on the scientific forefront. To date, we have funded 10 grants totaling $7 million. Basic Research Grants are one and two-year, renewable awards of up to $200,000. These grants provide funding in novel and innovative areas of research, often for preliminary data. Our investment in these researchers helps leverage research support at more comprehensive levels from other institutions such as the NIH. This funding offers scientists the potential for breakthroughs in previously unexplored areas of research. Over 200 articles have been published by scientists based on research funded by the Foundation's basic research grants. Short-Term Scientific Awards are grants issued for a maximum of $5,000. These awards are intended to facilitate the initiation of critical research projects, obtain preliminary data, learn new techniques in an established laboratory, or attend important meetings when no other funding is available. * Investing in Tomorrow... The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is committed to ensuring that pediatric HIV/AIDS remains the focus of researchers today.., and tomorrow. Programs like our Scholar Awards and Student Intern Awards are designed to encourage some of our nation's brightest minds to focus their future efforts on helping to create a more hopeful future for children with HIV/AIDS. Scholar Awards are a powerful incentive for a new generation of scientists to take an early professional interest in studying pediatric HIV/AIDS. The impact of this award is substantial, especially in light of the scarcity of funding for new investigators. Scientists are given salary support for two years totaling $66,000 to work with sponsors who have an established track record in HIV/AIDS research. Through this mentoring relationship, a growing number of talented investigators are focusing their efforts on pediatric HIV/AIDS research. Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Scholars have contributed to our understanding of children's immune response to HIV, transmission of HIV from mother to child, and the impact of HIV on the growth and development of young children.
