[Promotional Materials, International Conference on AIDS (13th : 2000 : Durban, South Africa)]
Why is Pediatrzic AIDS research unmportant? Page Two What is the Relationship Between Pediatric and Adult Research? Certain research questions can only be answered by studying the mother-infant population. For example, will treatment of HIV infected mothers prevent HIV infection of infants? Or, will an AIDS vaccine given at birth to an infant born to an HIV infected mother prevent HIV infection? These and many other questions can only be answered by studying mothers and infants. But answers to these questions may benefit adults as well. If a vaccine were effective in preventing HIV infection of infants, it might provide some clues to the kind of vaccine needed for adults. And the effectiveness of some drugs might be more quickly seen in children whose disease progresses more rapidly than adults. Positive research results are quickly conveyed to all researchers so that the results of pediatric HIV /AIDS research can be applied to as many individuals as possible. Research that the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation supports, while focusing on children is of benefit to anyone affected by HIV/AIDS. 4/17/96
