A PRINCIPLE: GENDER EQUITY UN PRINCIPE: EGALITE DES SEXES UN PRINCIPIO: IGUALDAD SEXUAL Prejudice comes in all shapes and sizes. In the areas where PLAN is working, one of the clearest representations of it is discrimination against women and girls. They can face real economic, social and cultural barriers to their own development and have little control over their own lives. Changing attitudes is essential if this is ever going to be different, and the most important place to start is among the children. TANZANIA Involving the children in its work is one of PLAN's priorities. In Tanzania one of the most effective ways of listening to the children is the Children's Baraza, an annual forum at which they can address and discuss key issues which affect their lives. It is an important event, attended by some 300 children each year, and it is here that gender barriers are being quickly and efficiently broken down. For the second consecutive year a girl has been elected by her peers as Chair of the Baraza. This is an important breakthrough in a culture where many people, including young boys, consider girls to be less able and where the girls often lack the confidence to prove otherwise. For Jumaa Malalo, the change has been marked. Until recently he did not believe that girls were as competent as boys academically. Today he says, "I now realise that girls have many talents and abilities. They may be better at some things and it is only to my advantage to appreciate them rather than to ignore their abilities because they are girls." For the girls, the confidence that comes from participating in the Baraza and being inspired by female role models is clear. "I could not sit next to a boy in class," says Theodosia Mtelan. "Let alone speak to him about anything! Now it is different. I look for boys in other classes if they understand my problem better. Maybe I am more mature now." This year's Chairperson, elected unanimously as the person who would best represent the interests of all the children, is 12 year-old Marya Alphonce. For her the fact that she is female is irrelevant, "We are all children in the Baraza. Age is not an issue, nor is gender. It is the quality of the contribution made by each participant that is important." L'etendue et la forme que prennent les prejuges sont multiples. Dans les zones ou travaille PLAN, la discrimination a I'encontre des femmes et des filles en est une parfaite illustration. Elles peuvent ttre confrontees a de reelles barrieres economiques, sociales et culturelles qui entravent leur evolution, et elle n'exercent que peu de controle sur leurs propres vies. II est primordial de changer les attitudes si I'on veut que les choses soient differentes, et le meilleur point de depart pour cela, ce sont les enfants. TANZANIE L'une des priorites de PLAN est d'impliquer les enfants dans son travail. En Tanzanie, une des meilleures faons d'ecouter les enfants est le Baraza des Enfants, un forum annuel pendant lequel ils peuvent traiter et discuter des questions-cles qui affectent leurs vies. C'est un ev6nement important auquel participent chaque annee quelques 300 enfants, et c'est lki que les barrieres entre les sexes sont rapidement et efficacement brisees. Pour la deuxieme annee consecutive, une fille a ete Blue par ses pairs comme Pr6sidente du Baraza. C'est une avanc~e de taille dans une culture ou de nombreuses personnes, y compris les jeunes garcons, considerent que les filles sont moins competentes et oi les filles n'ont souvent pas assez confiance en elles pour prouver le contraire. Pour Jumaa Malalo, le changement a etd net. II y a encore peu, il ne pensait pas que les filles etaient scolairement aussi comptentes que les garcons. Aujourd'hui, il dit "je me rends compte maintenant que les filles ont beaucoup de talent et de dons. Elles peuvent itre meilleures pour certaines choses et c'est tout A mon avantage de les appr&cier plutat que d'ignorer leurs capacit~s parce que ce sont des filles". Chez les filles, la confiance qui accompagne la participation au Baraza et I'inspiration fournie par les modules de r6les feminins est evidente. "Je ne pouvais pas m'asseoir pros d'un garcon en classe", dit Theodosia Mtelan, " et encore moins lui parler de quoi que ce soit! Maintenant c'est different. Je cherche des garcons dans les autres classes s'ils comprennent mieux mon problme. Je suis peut-etre plus mOre maintenant". La Presidente de cette annie, iue a l'unanimite comme la personne la mieux a mime de representer les interets de tous les enfants, est une fillette de 12 ans, Marya Alphonce. Pour elle, le fait d'etre une fille est hors de propos. " Nous sommes tous des enfants au Baraza. L'age n'a pas d'importance, et le sexe non plus. C'est la qualite de I'apport de chaque participant qui compte". Los prejuicios vienen en todas las formas y medidas. En las regiones donde PLAN esta presente una de las mas claras expresiones de esto es la discriminaci6n contra las mujeres y las nifias. Ellas pueden enfrentar verdaderas barreras econ6micas, sociales y culturales para su desarrollo personal y poseen escaso control sobre sus propias vidas. El cambio de actitudes es fundamental para que esta situacion cambie, y el lugar mas importante para comenzar es entre los nifnos.
